Boral has launched a new carbon reporting capability designed to give customers consolidated information on the embodied carbon associated with concrete products used in their projects.

The company said the automated capability removes the need for customers to manually compile information from multiple environmental product declarations (EPDs), instead providing a single statement for selected projects or customer accounts. The reports include total embodied carbon as well as product-level breakdowns for concrete supplied by Boral.

Boral said the calculations draw on actual customer delivery docket data and its internal database, covering raw materials used in individual concrete mixes, their origin, and estimated transport between facilities and customer sites.

The company said the capability is intended to support both project-level and portfolio-level analysis, allowing customers to better understand their carbon footprint, monitor sustainability progress and identify potential emissions reduction opportunities.

Dr Ali Nezhad, Head of Sustainability and Innovation at Boral, said access to more detailed carbon information is becoming increasingly important as sustainability reporting requirements develop.

“As government and customers place greater emphasis on decarbonisation, organisations need more accurate and accessible carbon information to better understand their footprint and identify where reductions can be made,” Dr Nezhad said.

“This is particularly important as mandatory sustainability reporting expectations continue to evolve across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.”

The new reporting capability complements Boral’s EPD On Demand service, which provides project-specific, third-party verified EPDs. According to Boral, the automated data generation process can deliver these EPDs within 72 hours, compared with a traditional manual process that can take more than three months.

Dr Nezhad said the two services are intended to give customers greater flexibility in accessing carbon information.

“Together, these capabilities allow us to provide customers with simplified and streamlined carbon information that best suits their reporting requirements, while quickly reflecting changes arising from our ongoing decarbonisation initiatives,” he said.

“As Boral reduces emissions in our cement and concrete production, more agile reporting helps ensure customers can see and report the benefit of that progress sooner.”
