Capral, Australia’s largest extruder and distributor of aluminium products, has received acclaim at the 2023 Architecture and Design Sustainability Awards for its innovative LocAl Lower Carbon Aluminium.

The accolade positions LocAl as the Green Building Product category winner, marking a significant achievement in sustainable design and architecture.

The Sustainability Awards, Australia’s premier program dedicated to recognising excellence in sustainable design and architecture, honoured Capral at its 17th annual gala event held on 9 November in Sydney.

Capral’s LocAl stood out among the entries, showcasing the company’s dedication to environmentally conscious practices and responsible aluminium stewardship.

Introduced in November 2022, LocAl aimed to provide Australian manufacturers, architects, and designers with locally extruded, lower-carbon aluminium.

The LocAl offer includes two lower carbon aluminium options: LocAl Green, with carbon emissions of 8kg CO2e/kg Al*, and LocAl Super Green, with a remarkably low carbon intensity of 4kg CO2e/kg Al* — one of the lowest globally.

Kellie Moore, corporate marketing and communications manager at Capral, expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the expertise of the judging panel comprised of leaders from universities, industry associations, and architecture firms.

Moore stated, “They know what sustainable buildings look like and what it takes to achieve them – and they picked LocAl.”

Capral also takes pride in being the first in the Australian window industry to standardise lower carbon aluminium on its window and door products, without imposing a pricing premium.

The LocAl Green badge, with a carbon intensity of 8kg CO2e/kg Al*, is now standard on all Capral proprietary window and door systems, promoting sustainability without added costs.

Moore highlighted the significance of reducing embodied carbon, stating, “We must also prioritize the reduction of embodied carbon.”

In addition to the award-winning LocAl Lower Carbon Aluminium offer, Capral has achieved certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), making it the only ASI-certified extruder in Australia.

The ASI certification underscores Capral’s commitment to responsible aluminium production, covering 26 facilities across mills, distribution centres, and trade centres nationwide.

Capral’s Sustainability Award coincides with the expansion of the LocAl offer into rolled products, now including LocAl aluminium plate options.
