Ballarat-based food manufacturer Ferndale Foods Australia is expanding its international presence while investing in local manufacturing capacity, following the launch of its JILA brand across 16,500 stores in South Korea.
According to Ferndale Foods Australia, JILA products are being introduced through the CU Convenience and Olive Young retail networks, with a further 11,000 stores expected to follow during the first quarter of 2027. If completed, the expansion would take the brand’s South Korean retail presence to about 27,500 outlets.
The company said the international expansion comes alongside continued investment in its gum, mint and healthy snacking operations. Ferndale invested $1 million in expanding its mint production capacity about 18 months ago, while a further $3 million packing line is scheduled for installation in early 2027.
The new packing line is expected to increase capacity in the operation fivefold, according to the company.
Ferndale Foods Australia Operations Manager Leigh Edward said the expansion demonstrated the opportunities available to regional manufacturers.
“We’re showing that a business based in Ballarat can compete internationally on quality and value,” Edward said.
“The South Korean launch is a significant milestone for JILA and for our team. Having products made here in regional Victoria reach 16,500 stores overseas is something we’re incredibly proud of, and there is substantial further opportunity ahead.”
Alongside its JILA brand, Ferndale manufactures private-label gum and mints for major Australian retailers. Edward said the company’s focus on value had become increasingly important amid economic uncertainty.
“Consumers are watching what they spend, but they still expect a quality product. Our focus has been on delivering both,” he said.
The company’s manufacturing operations also extend into healthy snacking through FoodLine Australia, which represents a $23 million investment in the sector. Ferndale said the operation is forecast to produce more than 55 million bars in 2027 for major global brands.
Ferndale employs approximately 100 people across its Ballarat operations and said it remains focused on further investment in regional Victoria.
“Ballarat is our home, and we’re committed to continuing to invest here,” Edward said.
“These investments are about building the capacity to meet demand and creating a strong future for the business and the people who work with us.”
