Rockwell Automation has launched a new controller for manufacturing and industrial automation applications, combining integrated safety, cybersecurity capabilities and enhanced performance in a compact platform designed for machine builders and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

The CompactLogix 5390 controller expands the company’s Integrated Architecture portfolio, targeting manufacturers managing increasingly connected operations and more complex automation requirements.

According to Rockwell Automation, the controller includes cybersecurity capabilities aligned with IEC 62443-4-2 and is designed to support readiness for the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act. The company said these features aim to help machine builders address evolving security and regulatory requirements while simplifying machine design.

The controller also supports PointMax I/O for modular system architectures and has a footprint 43 per cent smaller than previous CompactLogix 5380 controllers, according to the company. The reduced footprint is intended to help manufacturers save control panel space and standardise designs across machine families.

“Manufacturers and machine builders are being asked to do more than deliver performance. They must also address increasingly stringent cybersecurity and safety requirements while managing larger, more connected operations,” said Siva Iyyamperumal, senior product manager at Rockwell Automation.

“CompactLogix 5390 controllers bring these capabilities together in a single platform, helping customers simplify machine design, support regulatory readiness and scale advanced automation applications with confidence,” he said.

The controller integrates with Rockwell Automation’s broader portfolio, including PointMax I/O, Kinetix motion solutions, PowerFlex drives, Stratix networking technologies and FactoryTalk Design Studio software.

The company said the integrated architecture is designed to simplify engineering workflows, reduce commissioning risks and support scalability from standalone machines to more complex production systems.

Rockwell Automation said the controller is intended for OEMs, systems integrators and end users working with complex machinery, process skids and production systems. Its capabilities include enhanced processing power, connectivity and scalability to support data integration and diagnostics across industrial operations.
