Brisbane-based battery manufacturer Redflow has deployed its zinc-bromine flow batteries at the third and final weather radar site in regional NSW as part of the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) Renewable Hybrid Power Supply (RHPS) initiative.

The batteries were installed by an integration partner, Seven20 Electrical, at three radar locations in Yeoval, Hillston and Brewarrina as part of the BoM’s hybrid solar, battery and diesel solution.

Installation of the final system at Brewarrina was completed in January, following delays caused by the extreme weather occurrences in NSW in recent months.

The RHPS at these three locations is intended to lower net emissions and ongoing power costs while enhancing the reliability of power at these vital infrastructure facilities.

The hybrid system delivers backup power for continued site operation in the case of a grid power breakdown, as well as integrated renewable generating and battery storage for less expensive electricity.

Each site received between 8 and 10 ZBM2 flow batteries, which are integrated and controlled using the Redflow Battery Management System operating with the installed Victron inverters.

Tim Harris, Redflow CEO and managing director, said that as a proud Australian energy business, the company is delighted to have been selected as the preferred energy storage solution and supporting critical government infrastructure.

“It was fantastic to be working with our long-time integration partner Seven20 Electrical, and successfully deploying solar and storage to the three sites,” Mr Harris said.

The Redflow official added that the company looks forward to exploring new opportunities with the BoM and other partners to assist with the RHPS program’s national rollout.
