The Western Australian Government has opened a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking an anchor tenant for the South West Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Hub (AMTECH) in Picton, as part of plans to expand the State’s manufacturing capability and support the energy transition.
According to the WA Government, businesses and organisations have until 30 September to submit proposals to establish and operate a new advanced manufacturing facility at the site.
The State Government has committed $55 million towards land activation and the establishment of the manufacturing facility, with earthworks having commenced in June. Construction will be overseen by DevelopmentWA, while the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification is leading the search for an anchor tenant.
The government said the successful tenant will work with the State to manufacture components needed to support Western Australia’s transition away from State-owned coal by 2030.
The WA Government said manufacturing remains one of the South West’s largest industries, contributing almost $9.9 billion to State output over the past year and accounting for around 9 per cent of regional employment.
It said AMTECH is intended to support the continued growth of advanced manufacturing while contributing to economic diversification in the region.
Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson said the project represented an opportunity for businesses to play a significant role in the hub.
“The Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Hub will transform the South West manufacturing industry and now is the time for businesses who want to take a major role as the anchor tenant to come on board,” Sanderson said.
She said the State Government remained committed to advancing both its energy transition and economic diversification objectives.
“Local manufacturing is good for jobs, good for businesses, and good for our State’s economy,” she said.
Planning and Lands Minister John Carey said the government had unlocked land for the project to support industrial development.
“Our government has unlocked a significant amount of land for AMTECH, which will support the creation of local jobs and the diversification of our State’s economy,” Carey said.
South West Minister Don Punch said the hub would build on the region’s manufacturing history by creating employment opportunities and attracting new businesses.
“The South West has a proud manufacturing history, and AMTECH will help build on that legacy by creating new jobs, attracting businesses, and growing the local economy,” Punch said.
Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said the release of the RFP marked another step towards delivering the project.
“This new hub will diversify the local economy and help support new local jobs in Collie-Preston for years to come,” Hanns said.
