The Queensland Government has announced the installation of a new high-tech welding robot at the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) facility in Torbanlea, marking a key milestone in the state’s ongoing manufacturing project.
According to the Queensland Government, construction of the QTMP facility is progressing on schedule, with the structure now complete and internal fit-out underway ahead of manufacturing operations planned to begin in 2026.
In a news release, the government said the welding robot is being installed to assist with the precise assembly of train components, enabling more efficient and consistent production processes.
Once the installation is complete, the government noted that local workers will undergo training on the equipment, with recruitment continuing for the 300 positions required to operate the site.
Minister for Manufacturing Dale Last said the installation represents a significant step for Queensland’s manufacturing capabilities.
“This is what delivery looks like, with specialist equipment going in, manufacturing infrastructure rising out of the ground and a tradie job bonanza underway to get the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program back on track,” Last said.
He said the arrival of the equipment supports the government’s goal of creating long-term skilled careers in regional Queensland.
“The installation of this advanced robotic welder and other specialist equipment is a significant milestone that will deliver high-skilled careers into regional Queensland,” Last said.
Member for Maryborough John Barounis said the development reflects a strong investment in local manufacturing and regional jobs.
“The Queensland Government is delivering high-tech equipment, high-skilled jobs and high-value manufacturing right here in Torbanlea,” Mr Barounis said.
“This facility will deliver new skills and great careers for local tradies, apprentices and engineers, and it’s all happening because the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program is being put back on track.”
The Queensland Government said the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program aims to support the state’s manufacturing sector and strengthen employment opportunities ahead of future transport demands, including the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
