Australia Post has announced an infrastructure investment in regional New South Wales, with six new purpose-built facilities planned for Tumut, Leeton, Casino, Deniliquin, Forbes and Byron Bay.
The move is part of a broader strategy to expand parcel processing capacity and improve postal services across rural and regional communities.
The new developments are expected to handle between 900 and 2,200 parcels per day, according to a media release from Australia Post.
The facilities are aimed at enhancing service delivery, improving operational efficiency, and creating safer workplaces for postal workers in these areas.
Sustainability will be a central element of the expansion, with each site to include 50kW rooftop solar systems.
Several locations will also feature rainwater harvesting systems and electric vehicle charging infrastructure as part of Australia Post’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
Shane Plant, Australia Post General Manager Network Development & Support Services, said the investment aligns with the company’s focus on meeting the growing needs of regional customers.
“In New South Wales, we’ve seen online purchases increase by 2.8% year-on-year, with data indicating that 82% of NSW households are now shopping online,” Plant said.
“As regional areas increasingly depend on eCommerce due to fewer physical retail offerings, these purpose-built sites will enable Australia Post to meet the growing parcel demand in these regions.”
Plant added that the project goes beyond logistics, aiming to improve working conditions for staff and deliver infrastructure that serves local communities well into the future.
Construction timelines vary by site. Work has already begun on the Tumut facility, which is expected to open in late 2025.
The other five greenfield sites – ranging in size from 1,105 to 3,072 square metres – are scheduled for construction in 2026, with most expected to open towards the end of that year. The Byron Bay facility, the largest of the group, is projected to be operational by mid-2027.
In addition to these greenfield sites, Australia Post has secured a brownfield site in Narrandera, with further lease negotiations underway for sites in Cooma and Ballina.
The expansion in New South Wales forms part of Australia Post’s nationwide strategy to support growth in regional areas, with further infrastructure developments planned across other States and Territories.
