Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has entered a new research partnership with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) aimed at guiding the responsible and innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) in sport.

The three-year collaboration seeks to deliver a world-first AI for Australian sport roadmap and establish a framework for responsible AI use across all levels of sporting activity, the agency said in a news release.

The agreement responds to a growing demand for coordination, ethical standards, and shared knowledge as AI becomes more embedded in the sporting landscape.

CSIRO’s Data61 Director, Professor Jon Whittle, said the partnership represents a major step forward in helping sport unlock the full potential of digital technologies while upholding values of fairness and transparency.

“We are committed to delivering positive impact across all levels of sport and helping the ASC inspire more Australians to be involved in sport,” Prof Whittle said.

“The AI roadmap and responsible AI practices will help improve the performance and integrity of Australian sport, positioning us as a global leader.”

The AI for Australian sport roadmap will explore existing applications, identify common challenges and opportunities across different sports, and set research and development priorities.

Alongside this, a responsible AI position statement and practical checklist will be created to assist sporting bodies, clubs and community stakeholders in adopting AI ethically and inclusively.

ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM welcomed the initiative as a key opportunity to embed innovation into Australia’s sporting systems.

“Working in collaboration with CSIRO, the ASC will be well placed to support Australian sport to better harness data and emerging digital technologies within strong ethical and responsible guardrails,” Mr Perkins said.

“It is also an opportunity for the ASC and CSIRO to workshop how Australian sport can reap the benefits of AI.”

The project will also identify cross-sport research opportunities aligned with CSIRO’s technical expertise, allowing the partnership to expand into new areas as the role of AI in sport evolves.
