NOX Energy has announced a project to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging access for residents of strata-titled buildings across Australia, with the installation of 1,956 load-managed, Intelligent Power Sockets (IPS) at a minimum of 16 sites.
The initiative is supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
Strata residents often face challenges adopting EVs due to limited access to home charging infrastructure. Many existing buildings lack the electrical capacity or wiring needed for Level 2 charging, and retrofitting can be costly and complex.
ARENA said governance processes within strata schemes and slow approval timelines further complicate installation, while low initial uptake can discourage investment.
It noted the project seeks to overcome these technical, regulatory, and financial barriers by offering lower-cost, modular charging solutions.
The IPS units will be managed through NOX Energy’s app-connected NOX Management System (NMS), allowing monitoring and reimbursement for energy used without imposing costs on the building’s owners corporation.
NOX Energy will trial the system at the selected sites, analysing usage data, refining the product, and engaging with residents to understand EV adoption behaviours.
The initiative aims to demonstrate the viability of Level 1 charging in apartment settings, accelerate uptake of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) among strata residents, and prepare NOX Energy to scale its charging solution.
The project will also produce knowledge-sharing content on the drivers of BEV adoption in apartments, pathways for faster strata approvals, and insights into user behaviour and maintenance practices.
