The New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (NSW EPA) fined Glass Recycling Pty Ltd, a glass processing company in Western Sydney, $15,000 for alleged storage breaches of waste materials outside the recycler’s facility at Swaffham Road, Minto.
Glass Recycling, which holds an Environment Protection License to operate a resource recovery facility, stored glass storage outside its facility – an act that was otherwise a breach of the EPA Compliance Policy.
Cognizant of the issuance of an EPA penalty notice, the recycling company still failed to comply with the license’s requirement.
On 2 December 2020, an EPA inspector reported the storage breaches.
Glass Recycling’s facility holds a record of non-compliance.
Commenting on the gravity of the issue, EPA Director Regulatory Operations Cate Woods said: “The glass can break and enter the environment as windblown particles or be washed into the stormwater system.
“The EPA wants to ensure there is a level playing field for all resource recovery operators, and that includes complying with the terms of their Environment Protection License and the law.”
According to Woods, penalty notices encourage facilities to comply with environmental regulations.
Upon recognizing the notice, the recipient may pay the notice, request a review, or bring the matter to the court.
