Sandvik Coromant has expanded its CoroDrill® Dura 462 product family with a new range of solid carbide drills designed for manufacturing applications requiring hole depths of up to 30 times the drill diameter.

In a media release, the company said the expansion extends the portfolio from micro and short-hole drilling to deep-hole applications, giving manufacturers a single product family for a broader range of materials and machining requirements.

The new drills are available in lengths from 12×D to 30×D and feature grade X2BM, Zertivo® 2.0 PVD coating and a micro-grained carbide substrate. According to Sandvik Coromant, the design aims to improve process reliability, hole quality, chip evacuation and tool life.

“Process security remains one of their top priorities,” said James Thorpe, global product manager at Sandvik Coromant, referring to customer feedback. He added that manufacturers increasingly seek tools that deliver reliable results across different materials and operating conditions rather than solutions optimised for individual applications.

The drill’s design incorporates a refined flute geometry, offset double margins, double gashes, blended root radii and a 135-degree point angle. Sandvik Coromant said these features are intended to improve stability and reduce cutting forces during deep-hole drilling.

In customer field trials comparing the new drill with competitor tools, the company reported an average 45% increase in tool life and a 25% productivity improvement. These results were presented by Sandvik Coromant and have not been independently verified in the supplied release.

For applications exceeding 15×D, the company recommends using a corresponding CoroDrill® Dura 462 short-hole drill to create a pilot hole, rather than requiring a dedicated pilot drill. The tools are also designed for reconditioning through multiple cycles while maintaining their original performance and cutting diameter, according to the company.

Cory Carpenter, global product and digital application specialist at Sandvik Coromant, said the expanded range allows manufacturers to use the same product family for micro, short-hole and deep-hole drilling.

The company said the approach is intended to simplify tooling selection, reduce inventory complexity and support lower tooling costs across manufacturing operations.
