thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers’ Green Hydrogen product division is set to install the world’s first and most powerful electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen.

Hydro-Québec, one of the largest hydropower suppliers in North America, will operate the forthcoming 88 megawatt (MW) water electrolysis plant capable of producing 11,100 metric tons of green hydrogen annually.

Considered to be a cornerstone in decarbonizing the industrial sector, water electrolysis is the only scaled technology for producing sustainable hydrogen.

With the megascale project, thyssenkrupp is looking to unlock the economic viability of green hydrogen at an industrial level. The Essen-based energy company claims to offer the world’s largest standard modules, which when combined can achieve capacities in the gigawatt range.

“This project is an excellent illustration of how important the interaction of secure access to competitive renewable energy and the use of scaled technology for hydrogen production is,” said Sami Pelkonen, CEO of thyssenkrupp’s Chemical & Process Technologies business unit.

“Quebec as a region and Hydro-Québec as a customer offer ideal conditions for installing our water electrolysis technology on a multi-megawatt scale for the first time,” Denis Krude, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers, added.

Commissioning for the record-project is scheduled for late 2023.
