Manufacturing and recycling have been highlighted in South East Queensland with the launch of the region’s first solar-powered reverse vending machine, according to Container Exchange, marking a step forward for the state’s circular economy infrastructure and locally built technology.
The new Containers for Change reverse vending machine (RVM), located at Great Western Super Centre in Keperra, was manufactured by Queensland green technology company Ecoboxtec and is operated by Community Co Recycling. It runs on solar power and is designed to provide a convenient, on-the-go option for container refunds.
This Australia Made Week, happening from 18 to 24 May, Containers for Change is highlighting the installation as an example of homegrown manufacturing and recycling innovation.
Since its launch in April 2026, the machine has processed more than 88,000 containers, returning over $8,800 in 10-cent refunds to users.
Community Co Recycling Managing Director Doogan O’Hanlon said the location of the machine supports everyday recycling habits by placing refund access where people already shop.
“The RVM is located close to the shopping centre, so claiming your 10-cent refund or donating it to charity is as easy as bringing your containers along with your weekly shop,” O’Hanlon said.
Ecoboxtec Founder and Director Julien Craeye said the project reflects a manufacturing approach focused on local conditions and production.
“Our Australian Made solar-powered RVMs are built to handle tough Australian conditions while providing a reliable and sustainable way for communities to recycle,” Craeye said, adding that designing and building the systems locally helps retain manufacturing capability and expertise in Queensland.
Lauren Christian, Executive General Manager of Strategy, Design and Technology at Container Exchange, said the initiative demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between technology providers, operators and the scheme.
“By combining homegrown technology with on-the-ground expertise, we’re expanding the network in smarter, more sustainable ways and making recycling even more accessible for communities,” Christian said.
The Keperra RVM operates daily from 7am to 9pm, allowing customers to use their Containers for Change member number to receive refunds directly into a bank account or donate proceeds to charity.
