The NSW Government has approved the development of an additional BlueScope Steel factory in Western Sydney, set to enhance housing supply and create local domestic manufacturing employment opportunities.

In a media release, the government said this development is set to play a vital role in strengthening the supply of BlueScope steel products to meet the demands of the building and construction industry.

The new factory, with an expected completion date in 2025, is projected to manufacture approximately 240,000 new Colorbond steel rooftops annually, along with 80,000 new steel house frames.

Not only will it bolster the housing supply by ensuring a reliable source of BlueScope steel products for the building and construction sector, but it will also have a positive impact on the local economy.

The Western Sydney community stands to gain substantially from this initiative, as it will generate over 300 new job opportunities, including 43 permanent positions at the plant.

During the construction phase, around 258 jobs will be created, further contributing to the employment landscape in the region.

The private investment of $320 million will support the construction of the factory, which will be established at the existing BlueScope Western Sydney Service Centre located on Templar Road in Erskine Park.

In a statement, Premier of NSW Chris Minns expressed that the approved development aligns with the innovative advancements they aim to encourage within NSW.

“Not only will this factory boost our states domestic manufacturing capability, it will also provide vital materials as we boost housing supply,” the premier noted.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully highlighted that the planning approval represents a significant step towards supporting increased housing supply and economic growth.

“The project is a major $320 million investment into the future of domestic steelmaking and will play an important role in supporting housing and infrastructure projects,” Minister Scully noted.

Minister for Domestic Manufacturing and Government Procurement Courtney Houssos underlined the commitment of the Minns Labor Government to rejuvenate the domestic manufacturing industry, particularly in Western Sydney.

“This project will create good, well-paid jobs in Western Sydney, with the important multiplier effects they bring,” Minister Houssos remarked.
