NMFTA has released a free artificial intelligence governance framework aimed at helping trucking and logistics organisations adopt AI technologies while managing cybersecurity and operational risks.

According to the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA), the NMFTA Cybersecurity AI Governance Framework provides 50 practical controls designed to support transportation companies as AI becomes increasingly integrated into day-to-day operations, including maintenance planning, route optimisation, cybersecurity monitoring and back-office functions.

The association said AI offers opportunities to improve efficiency and decision-making but also raises considerations around data protection, oversight, accountability and operational risk.

The framework is intended to help fleets, logistics providers and other transportation organisations establish governance policies, assess risks and implement safeguards before AI systems become embedded in critical business processes.

“Many organisations are already using AI in some capacity, whether through dedicated tools or capabilities embedded within existing software platforms,” said Ben Wilkens, director of cybersecurity for NMFTA.

“The challenge isn’t whether AI will be part of operations—it’s ensuring organisations have the visibility, governance, and controls necessary to use it responsibly,” Wilkens said.

NMFTA said the framework was developed specifically for transportation operations and covers five governance domains. It is designed to help organisations evaluate AI use cases, define accountability, assess technology vendors, protect sensitive data and manage cybersecurity risks associated with AI-enabled systems.

The association said the resource is available free of charge to support the responsible adoption of AI across the trucking and logistics sector.
